The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
